ON DEMAND: MCLE Volunteer Training: Eviction Defense

This training provides an overview of how to answer an unlawful detainer complaint and preserve issues for trial.  It covers defenses related to notices, service of process, habitability, FEHA, the Tenant Protection Act of 2019, and more.  After completing this training attorney volunteers can sign up to participate at Community Legal Aid SoCal’s legal aid clinics as well as those at other local organizations.   

MCLE Disclaimer: MCLE credit is only granted to attorneys licensed to practice law by the State Bar of California. Attorneys from other jurisdictions should contact their state bar to learn about credit reciprocity.

ON DEMAND: Wills & Trusts: Where You Begin

Planning for the end of life, illness or disability is complicated, and it’s hard to know where to start. Preparing proper legal documentation now, while you are still able, can protect your loved ones financially and emotionally in case of death or incapacity. This class provides you with the legal basics, including the different ways of ensuring that your money and property pass to your heirs the way you want and with as little trouble and expense as possible (wills and trusts), plus the options available to make sure you receive the medical treatment you want at the end of life (advanced health care directives). You will also learn about free resources available to help. Learning important legal fundamentals about wills, trusts and advanced health care planning can make your legal journey easier and more successful.
               
Class covers:

  • The importance of writing a will and/or creating a trust
  • Pros and cons of trusts vs. wills, and why you might need both
  • Do-it-yourself estate planning vs. hiring a lawyer
  • What probate is, and how to help your heirs avoid it
  • Different types of trusts, and when each is appropriate
  • Advanced health care directives: how to make sure you receive the medical treatment you want during severe illness or end of life

 La clase cubre:

  • Herramientas legales para ayudar si la persona discapacitada entiende que necesita y quiere ayuda para gestionar su autocuidado
  • Una descripción general de las tutelas testamentarias si la capacidad es una preocupación
  • Explicar el proceso judicial para ser nombrado curador
  • Qué esperar antes de la audiencia sobre el nombramiento de un tutor
  • Qué esperar si lo nombran curador y sus responsabilidades

IN-PERSON: Eviction Defense: Help Using Tenant Power Toolkit to Answer Eviction Complaints

Friday, Oct. 25, 2024 | 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

 Have you been served with eviction paperwork (a Summons and a Complaint-Unlawful Detainer)? You may only have five days to respond! At this clinic, attendees seeking assistance with answering an unlawful detainer (eviction) complaint will be guided through the Tenant Power Toolkit (

This workshop covers:

  • How to use the Tenant Power Toolkit
  • How to identify defenses against the eviction and complete responsive pleadings
  • How to request a fee waiver
  • How to use the Tenant Power Toolkit to find legal support

The Eviction Answer Tool will work for tenants who live anywhere in California who have been served a Summons and Complaint-Unlawful Detainer. Tenants in LA County (if they qualify for a fee waiver and are within their filing deadline) will get the option to have their documents be filed electronically with the court. All other tenants will have to file the documents the Toolkit creates in person, at the courthouse listed on your Summons and Complaint.
