ON DEMAND: Using Small Claims to Collect Back Rent

Under California law, back rent accrued during the pandemic may now be collected in a faster and simpler legal process in small claims court, where parties cannot be represented by an attorney. Landlords and tenants affected by COVID-19 are invited to attend this class to learn more about how and when such rental debt recovery claims can be filed, how small claims court compares to normal civil superior court, and what to expect when going through the small claims process.

Class covers:

  • Which partial or unpaid monthly rent payments due during COVID-19 may be collected in small claims court
  • How small claims court compares to civil (limited or unlimited) superior court, and possible advantages and disadvantages for tenants and landlords
  • How the smalls claims process works
  • How collection of COVID-19 back rent is affected by California COVID-19 Rent Relief program funds and local emergency protections in place in Los Angeles

IN-PERSON: How to Build a Resume That Gets Employers’ Attention

Are you using the old ways of preparing and presenting resumes that were around for decades?  Is your resume outdated?  Are you unsure what should be included or how it should be formatted?  In this class you will learn how to start your resume off so that it grabs recruiters’ and employers’ attention, how to present your information in a way that is more defined, and present yourself in a way that shows you know how to generate results. This will be a step by step class to help improve your resume and present yourself as a competent and competitive candidate.

1.       Understanding the information that makes you a more qualified candidate and what employers are looking for

2.       Using tools, such as templates, and online resources to build a better resume

3.       Drawing on your non-employment background and extra-curricular experience to build a compelling resume

4.       Understanding appropriate formatting, wording, length etc

ON DEMAND: Is This Civil Harassment? Laws, Tools & Resources

Learn the definition of civil harassment, how to identify harassment, and what tools and resources might be available.  If you or someone you love is experiencing abuse, violence or threats of violence outside of a dating or close personal relationship, that might be civil harassment.  Learn what is and what isn’t – and what you can do about it.

This class covers:

  • Types of restraining orders;
  • Who qualifies for a civil harassment (CH) restraining order;
  • How the CHRO process works;
  • What a CHRO can do; and
  • Where those in need can seek help

Although you can listen to the class from various kinds of devices, you will need video to view the speaker(s) and any presentation materials and the ability to type on your device and use Zoom to ask questions or use the chat features.
