In California, many families struggle to care for adults who are not able to care for themselves. A conservatorship is an arrangement approved by a judge where a responsible person or organization is put in charge of assisting an adult with a disability with personal care or finances. This session provides help in preparing and filing documents to be appointed as a conservator. 

Eligible applicants will be seen by appointment only. To begin the process, eligible applicants must attend one of two information sessions offered each month (offered in English or Spanish each month), held on Mondays at LA Law Library on a first-come first-served walk-in basis. Technology has provided so many ways for attorneys to locate the best and most on point statutes, cases, secondary sources and other relevant materials that it can be a little overwhelming. The goal of this course is to assist attorneys in navigating the world of online legal research, so they can competently – and confidently – research the subjects important to their work. During this session we will review recent enhancements to the Lexis platform, the power of Shepards, as well as highlight research best practices for navigating Lexis.com.

Class covers:

• Discover various methods for conducting research and when to use each.
• Gain an understanding of how online platforms have been enhanced to predict what you’re looking for.
• Ascertain the multiple ways to filter searches before and after inputting your search.
• Discover different search term approaches: natural language and terms and connectors.
• Understand the role technology plays in validating primary authority.

Una tutela es un arreglo aprobado por un juez en el que una persona u organización responsable se encarga de asistir a un adulto discapacitado con su cuidado personal o sus finanzas. Esta sesión proporciona ayuda en la preparación y presentación de documentos para ser nombrado como curador de una tutela. 

Los solicitantes elegibles serán atendidos sólo con cita previa. Implicit bias – a form of bias that occurs automatically and unintentionally – has an impact on people across the legal field, including judges, juries, clients, and attorneys. Everyday decision-making is unavoidably affected by implicit biases, stereotypes, and other types of cognitive biases. As attorneys, it is imperative that we understand these biases and take steps to ensure they do not have unfair or harmful consequences. The training will tackle intersectionality around implicit bias, and how attorneys can address implicit bias issues within themselves and the courtroom setting.

Class covers:

• The attitudes and stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner
• Recognizing implicit bias in ourselves, our workplaces, and the courtroom
• The concept of intersectionality, and why it is important to keep intersectionality in mind when addressing implicit bias issues
• Specific techniques that can interrupt implicit bias in courtroom settings

Co-Presented by Professor Christine Goodman and Vida Thomas:

Professor Christine Goodman joined the Pepperdine faculty in 2001. She teaches Evidence, Constitutional Law, Racial Justice, Trial Practice and Comparative Anti-Discrimination Law. Professor Goodman writes on equal protection topics, including implicit bias, algorithmic bias, affirmative action, preferences, diversity and racial privacy, as well as evidentiary and criminal law issues.

Vida Thomas is Managing Partner and Co-Owner of Oppenheimer Investigations Group.  Vida has conducted hundreds of workplace investigations, and teaches human resources professionals how to conduct effective workplace investigations. She also conducts inherent bias and diversity and inclusion training for private and public sector employers.
