In 1965, the Walt Disney Company proposed building a massive ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains, which was approved by the federal government in 1969, and would have irreversibly altered the practically untouched Mineral King Valley, a magnificently beautiful Alpine area. At first it seemed inevitable that this expanse of wild natural land would be radically changed and turned over to a private corporation. But then the scrappy Sierra Club pushed back with a lawsuit that ultimately propelled the modern environmental law era.

 This virtual event, led by a panel of distinguished civil rights attorneys, will review and analyze the elements of Eighth and Fourteenth Amendment claims on behalf of prisoners, with a focus on a recent notable case involving the right to adequate inmate medical treatment, Aliitasi T. Alapati v. City and County of San Francisco.

After participating in this session, attendees will be better able to:

• Understand the impact and importance of the settlement in Aliitasi T. Alapati v. City and County of San Francisco
• Understand and apply principles of Eighth Amendment prisoner claims, including specifically the ban on cruel and unusual punishment and inadequate medical care claims
• Evaluate due process claims of prisoners under the Fourteenth Amendment
• Gain insight into why litigating claims under the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments is so challenging

Los Angeles is facing a homelessness crisis and pro bono attorneys are needed to help prevent unjust evictions of low-income tenants. This training will provide an overview of the eviction process and outline current housing laws that protect tenants against eviction. After completing this training, attorney volunteers can join the We Are LA Pro Bono Project and partner with legal services organizations to provide free legal assistance to tenants facing eviction through clinics and full scope cases. Pro bono projects will provide volunteers the opportunity to practice landlord-tenant law and learn litigation skills while helping tenants navigate the eviction process.
