PACER is the federal court database used for accessing and searching federal court cases by docket number, party name, or topic. After decades of the same interface, PACER has updated the PACER case locator. Its new look and features may help you conduct better searches, narrow and sort search results, and save searches.

If you want to know the status of your federal court case or find out if others have filed or are part of another federal court case, this free, hands-on class may be just what you need. While e-filing will not be taught, the class will cover:

  • Registering for PACER
  • Understanding PACER's search options
  • How to enter and modify a search
  • How to calculate the cost of using PACER
  • How to use the training database
  • Other free federal court docket databases

Note: Space is limited due to limited number of classroom PCs

Paralegal Lit

Saturday, November 23, 2019: 10:00 a.m — 12:00 p.m.

Paralegal Lit gives students the opportunity to complete simulated fact situations comparable to those attorneys may ask paralegals for assistance in researching. Students will use real-world examples and common legal resources in print to experience how primary and secondary law work together.

Students will be given an overview of various types of legal materials, instructed in their usage, and gain a basic understanding of legal research techniques.

Students will complete hands-on exercises simulating on-the-job experience and receive a record of attendance.

Class covers:

  • Types of legal materials and how to use them
  • Using practice guides, codes and locating forms
  • Legal research core competencies
  • In-class, hands-on practice
  • Collection and services at the LA Law Library

Class size capped at 30 students.
Registration well in advance is recommended.
Attendance limited to current Paralegal Students.
Proof of current enrollment required.

Civil Lawsuit Basics: Vacating Defaults and Setting Aside Mistakes

Friday, January 26, 2018: 12:15 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

Mistakes happen in the course of a civil lawsuit. For example, a defendant may fail to respond to a lawsuit within the allotted time, resulting in a default; or, a plaintiff may fail to respond to a motion to dismiss filed by the defendant, resulting in dismissal. In this class, learn about civil procedures for setting aside defaults and other mistakes in California state courts.

Class covers:

  • California Code of Civil Procedure §473
  • When and how a party may seek relief from his or her mistakes
  • What constitutes “default” and “dismissal”
  • Preparing motions to vacate

Presented by Austin Stoub:
Austin Stoub originally joined LA Law Library as a Reference intern in January of 2010. Upon receiving his MLIS from UCLA in June of 2010, he joined the staff full time as a Reference Librarian. Since that time, he has overseen development of the collection for all states except California, developed and taught a number of classes and has taken a role in operations at Circulation and Copy Center. After earning a BA in Political Science from Calvin College in 2001, he worked in various levels of government before entering UCLA School of Information Science in 2008.
