Are you in need of public benefits but uncertain if you are eligible? Have you been receiving benefits but the amount changed or stopped altogether? In this class you will learn about public benefits programs available in Los Angeles County, such as CalWORKs, General Relief (GR), CalFresh and the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI). Whether you have questions about getting benefits or appealing a Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) decision, join Neighborhood Legal Services Los Angeles (NLSLA) to gain the information you need to get and keep the public benefits needed to meet your basic needs.

  • General relief available for low-income individuals in Los Angeles County
  • Food assistance programs for individuals in Los Angeles County
  • Benefits available for immigrants in Los Angeles County
  • What to do when your benefits are being reduced or have stopped
  • Appealing a DPSS decision

 Earn 1.0 hour general participatory MCLE credit

 Learn about the Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance (TAHO) adopted by the Los Angeles City Council in 2021. Tenant harassment is when a landlord knowingly takes actions that cause harm to a tenant. Join this training to learn about how to help tenants file a complaint to protect them against landlord harassment.

Class Covers:

  • What is landlord harassment
  • Violations under the Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance (TAHO)
  • How to file a TAHO complaint
  • Volunteer opportunities to help tenants on TAHO complaints

 Join a live question and answer session about tenants’ and landlords’ rights and responsibilities. An experienced landlord-tenant attorney will be available to answer questions about eviction protections for nonpayment of rent due to COVID-19, what landlords can and cannot do during (and after) the pandemic, the new process for collecting past-due rent through small claims court, what the outlook might be for renters now that the statewide eviction moratorium has expired and updated eviction protections for tenants in the City of Los Angeles and other parts of Los Angeles County. Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, you are welcome to attend and get the vital information you need.

In California, a landlord may be able to evict a tenant for not paying rent on time or violating the lease or rental agreement. This training will go over the rules and procedures in the evictions and collection process. The training will be followed by a live question and answer session with the presenter. Whether a landlord or a tenant, you are welcome to attend.

  • Valid reasons for terminating a tenancy
  • Termination notices
  • The eviction process
  • Problems with security deposit refund
  • Collecting past due rent
