LA Law Library is developing a self-service legal research model at the Norwalk and Pomona county courthouses with the potential for future expansion to other locations, and is exploring other options to provide service at the Santa Monica courthouse. LA Law Library plans to close its branch locations at the Norwalk, Pomona and Santa Monica county courthouses, in their current form, effective March 31, 2013. The self-service model will be rolled out shortly thereafter.
In addition to piloting the self-service model, LA Law Library is working on establishing other methods of delivering service including collaborations with the courts, legal service providers, members of local bar associations, and self-help centers. LA Law Library is also looking at expanding its partnerships beyond the existing collections and services in the Compton, Lancaster, Pasadena and Van Nuys libraries, and expanding its hours in Torrance and Long Beach, thus meeting legal research needs of more residents of Los Angeles County.
“The transition of these branches from brick and mortar to one focused on self-help and digital resource access more fully supports the courts, and in the end, will better serve self-represented litigants and attorneys throughout the County,” said Sandra J. Levin, Executive Director, LA Law Library. “We apologize for any inconvenience to our patrons in the short-term and will work with them on meeting their legal research needs through our Main Library in downtown LA, staffed branch locations in Long Beach and Torrance, and library partnerships.”
