Special education is specifically designed instruction – provided at no cost to the parents – that is set up to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability. The special education process can be daunting and intimidating. This class focuses on special education rights and advocacy and helps parents understand the special education process. Attendees will learn how to make appropriate requests for special education assistance and receive information regarding eligibility requirements and resources for getting referrals, evaluation and services.

Class covers a basic introduction to the following topics:

• Rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
• Special education eligibility
• The Individual Education Program (IEP)
• Tips on what to do if a child is denied eligibility for special education
• What is a due process complaint?
