Criminal defense lawyers can no longer avoid learning basic immigration law. Both federal and state courts have held that criminal defense practitioners must know the basics of immigration law and how criminal convictions affect their non-citizen clients in order to competently fulfill their Sixth Amendment duties to their clients. In this class, learn the basics of discerning what negative immigration consequences can stem from criminal convictions (including guilty pleas) suffered by non-citizens, and how to attempt to mitigate them where possible.

• Deportable Offenses and Inadmissible Offenses: What these terms mean for your clients
• Negotiating immigration-neutral dispositions
• The importance of filing documentation for possible post-conviction review, and how to do it

Presented by Albert Camacho:
Albert Camacho Jr. has been an attorney with the Los Angeles County Office of the Public Defender for 24 years and has litigated misdemeanor and felony cases in both juvenile and adult courts. Since 2010, he has primarily been assigned to the Appellate Branch and has argued before both the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County and the California Court of Appeal. He has presented to both the Public Defender's and the Alternate Public Defender's Offices of Los Angeles County on numerous issues including felony sentencing, immigration consequences of criminal convictions, and motion practice. Mr. Camacho is a graduate of the USC Gould School of Law. He is also a graduate of California State University, Northridge, with a B.S. in Mathematics.
