ON DEMAND: MCLE: Volunteer Training: Establishing Guardianships

Class recorded October 26, 2023

Unfortunately, many caregivers do not know how to obtain the legal guardianship necessary to adequately provide for children in their care so they can make decisions about their education, medical needs and living arrangements.  If a legal guardianship is not established, these children are at significant risk of becoming part of the foster care system because there may be no other way to ensure that their basic needs are met.

Would you like to be part of the solution? This class will teach you how to help establish probate guardianships for minors whose parents can’t or won’t care for them and how to participate as a volunteer in a pro bono clinic helping complete the necessary court forms.

MCLE Disclaimer:

MCLE credit is only granted to attorneys licensed to practice law by the State Bar of California. Attorneys from other jurisdictions should contact their state bar to learn about credit reciprocity.

IN PERSON: Civil Lawsuit Basics: How to Correct Mistakes and Defaults

Thursday, January 18, 2024: 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Thursday, September 12, 2024: 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Mistakes happen in the course of a civil lawsuit. For example, a defendant may fail to respond to a lawsuit within the required time, resulting in a “default,” which terminates the rights of the defendant to dispute the allegations. Or, a plaintiff may fail to respond to a defense motion, resulting in dismissal of the lawsuit. In this class, learn how to get back on track by asking a judge to “set aside” (or undo) defaults and other mistakes in California state courts.

Class covers:

  • California Code of Civil Procedure § 473: what it is, and why you need it
  • When and how a party may seek relief from his or her mistakes
  • What constitutes “default” and “dismissal,” and what may be “set aside”
  • Preparing a motion to vacate default

Class approved for Court Interpreter Minimum Continuing Education (CIMCE) credit.
