Join us for an informative presentation hosted in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to learn about Social Security disability benefits, the application process, appeals, and the transition to adult benefits.
Topics will include:
• SSI Disability Benefits: An overview of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits, including basic medical and financial eligibility requirements, available benefit types, the application process, required documentation, and options for filing online, by phone, or through a local Social Security office.
• Initial Disability Applications: Information on starting a disability claim, including how to complete the application, provide medical evidence and work-history information, identify treating providers, respond to Social Security requests, and understand what to expect while the claim is under review.
• Appeals Process: An explanation of the steps available when a disability claim is denied, including reconsideration, an Administrative Law Judge hearing, and Appeals Council review. This includes filing deadlines, submission methods, and the importance of providing additional or updated evidence.
• Age 18 Transition: Guidance for individuals receiving childhood SSI benefits as they approach age 18. This includes the age-18 redetermination process, adult disability eligibility standards, continuing disability reviews, changes in financial eligibility rules, and steps individuals and families can take to help prevent interruptions in benefits.
Although you can listen to the class from various kinds of devices, you will need video to view the speaker(s) and any presentation materials, and will need to connect through a Zoom account to be able to participate in the written Q&A or chat features.
