4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
In this class, Second District Court of Appeal Justice Earl Johnson, Jr. (ret.), will speak on the history of a right to equal justice in European nations and the United States, and the related "civil Gideon" movement. The right to equal justice in civil cases, Justice Johnson will argue, would often, although not always, entail the right to representation by an attorney, analogous to the right to counsel in criminal cases recognized in Gideon v. Wainwright.
- The history of a right to equal justice;
- Appointment of counsel for indigents in other Western democracies;
- What a "civil Gideon" right might look like in the U.S.
