MCLE: We the Corporations: How American Businesses Won Their Civil Rights

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

As featured in the New York Times and elsewhere, UCLA School of Law Professor Adam Winkler’s critically acclaimed new book We the Corporations chronicles the astonishing story of one of the most successful yet least well-known “civil rights movements” in American history. Uncovering the roots of Citizens United, Prof. Winkler shows how that controversial Supreme Court decision was the capstone of a two-hundred-year struggle over corporate personhood and constitutional protections for business.

Class covers:

·        The legal history of “corporate personhood” in the United States

·        The extensive constitutional rights of corporations under current law

·        The untold story of how the stage was set for the controversial decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission giving corporations expansive free speech rights

The presenter will make his book We the Corporations: How American Businesses Won Their Civil Rights (Liveright Publishing, W.W. Norton & Co.) available for cash-only sale.
