Film, Free Speech & Fake News

Wednesday, May 1, 2019:  7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Free speech and the free press are cornerstones of the American experience, yet the thorny issue of fake news and its increasing influence may push even the most committed anti-censorship advocates toward regulation. Fake news is not a new concept but recent events and technological developments have made misinformation even more toxic. Jeremy Geltzer's interactive presentation explores fake news and film from the influence of Orson Welles and Nazi propaganda to the pseudo-documentaries of Michael Moore and Citizens United. The discussion will focus on the question: Can we condemn censorship and still favor regulations on fake news?

Class covers:

  • The history of fake news and film: Orson Welles, Nazi propaganda, Michael Moore, and Citizens United
  • How technology has made fake news more toxic
  • Fake news vs. the First Amendment
