Continuing the LA Law Library MCLE lunch hour speaker series, Julie A. Goren, Esq. will teach the the complexities of calendaring in California state court in this hands-on seminar.

Topic includes:

  • The steps that must be taken to calendar deadlines correctly
  • Avoiding common mistakes and pitfalls along the way. 
  • Calendaring exercises will allow attendees to immediately practice the steps and see where the dangers lurk.
  • Focus will be on calendaring deadlines for pleadings, discovery and the dangers lurking behind C.C.P. 12c as regards motion practice.

Julie A. Goren, Esq. is the author and publisher of two California civil litigation books: Litigation By The Numbers® and California Civil Litigation and Discovery, widely used in law firms and as required texts in civil litigation courses throughout California.

MCLE: Prop 8, DOMA and the Current State of Same Sex Marriage and Domestic Partnership Law

Continuing the LA Law Library MCLE lunch hour speaker series and in celebration of LA Pride, Audrey Stephanie Loftin and Rebecca Birmingham  of Long Beach Law, Inc. will give an overview of the current state of law as it applies to same sex marriage and domestic partnerships, followed by a discussion of the Proposition 8 and Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) cases pending before the United States Supreme Court: Hollingsworth v. Perry and United States v. Windsor.

Audrey Stephanie Loftin and Rebecca Birmingham were co-counsel with Lambda Legal, in the precedent setting case of Ellis vs. Arriaga (2008) 162 Cal.App.4th 1000, which extended the putative spouse doctrine to domestic partnerships, holding that California's domestic partnership law was intended to provide domestic partners equal treatment under the law.
